The commission holds public hearings on land use actions, development code changes and other zoning matters. It also recommends plans for regulating the growth, development, and beautification of the city in respect to its public and private buildings, streets, parks, grounds, and vacant lots. Planning ensures proper sanitation and service of public utilities. Planning commission decisions may be final or they may make recommendations to the city council.

The planning commission consists of not fewer than five members appointed by the city council, to four-year terms, from citizen volunteers, business owners, or non-residents who own property in Wheeler. The city council may not appoint more than two non-resident commissioners. No more than two voting members of the commission shall engage principally in buying, selling, or developing real estate for profit as individuals or be members of any partnership or officers or employees of a corporation that engages principally in buying, selling or developing real estate for profit. The planning commission cannot have more than two members engaged in the same kind of occupation, business, trade, or profession. The terms of the five planning commission members are staggered so that the terms of no more than two commissioners expire the same year.

The planning commission holds its meetings the first Thursday of every month at Wheeler City Hall at 7 p.m.

The city will, upon request, endeavor to arrange for the following services. Since the city must schedule these services with outside service providers, it is important to allow as much lead time as possible. Please notify the city of your need by 4 p.m., on the Friday preceding the meeting date.
