Wheeler Emergency Team

Wheeler Emergency Team Purpose

The Wheeler City Council recently authorized a citizen committee to identify areas of emergency preparedness planning that need to be updated and improved. This new committee is called the Wheeler Emergency Team (or W.E.T.).  W.E.T.’s focus will be on events or disasters that dramatically impact the normal operations of our community.  We do not and cannot function as first responders.  A primary goal of this group is to provide emergency preparedness information to our community; including how best to stay safe during the current Covid-19 Pandemic. Before orders for social distancing were instated—making meeting in person unadvisable—the WET committee had met just three times. No one could have anticipated the major impact Covid-19 has on our daily lives, and we are currently working out the best way for our committee to serve the city while lessening or avoiding risk of infection.

What the Wheeler Emergency Team Can Do to Help You Stay Safe

While we are all asked to stay at home, the Wheeler Emergency Team will continuously review Covid-19 updates and related information we believe are important for citizens to know.  Working with the City Manager, factual information and best practices (vetted through the County, State, and/or Federal official websites) will be posted here on the City of Wheeler’s  website. The W.E.T. Team plans to update the site regularly with the most current and accurate Covid-19 information available. Examples include: videos that show proper hand washing and safe food shopping, how to bring food supplies into your home, and recommended actions to avoid or address infection as outlined by the CDC (US Centers for Disease Control).

What Only You Can Do to Protect Yourself and Your Family

The WET Committee is a group of Wheeler volunteers committed to providing the best available Covid-19 information to our community.  At this difficult time in our history, it will be the responsibility of each citizen to do everything possible to keep themselves and their family safe. As this pandemic continues, every infection avoided will reduce risk to our community, and will reduce stress on local hospitals. To limit the rate of infection, we all must

  • practice social distancing,

  • practice proper hand washing

  • remain at home except for essential trips for food or medication.

Every individual who takes these actions will help everyone else in Wheeler stay much safer, too.  Thank you your part in limiting the spread of Covid-19 in Wheeler.
